Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a recessive genetic disorder where both parents of the patient are 'carriers' who contribute SMA genetic material to their children. The probability for a married couple who has been confirmed by a doctor (through genetic testing) as a 'carrier' to have an SMA child is 25%, which is one SMA child for every 4 births.
